31 Dec 2019 -  Chinese authorities inform WHO’s China office of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China.

January 1 -  Officials close the Huanan seafood market, suspected to be the source of the mystery disease

January 3 -  China reports a total of 44 suspected patients with the mystery disease.

January 9 - China reports the first death to be linked to the new coronavirus

January 12 - China shares the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus

January 21 -  WHO  reports first human-tohuman transmission of the virus

January 25 - Australia confirms the first case of COVID-19 – a man returning from Wuhan

January 26 -  China reports 769 new confirmed cases of COVID-19,

January 27 -  WHO chief Tedros travels to Beijing to meet with government and health experts on COVID-19 outbreak response

January 31 - More countries are applying border control measures against foreign nationals with recent travel history from China.

February 1 - In China, confirmed cases now total 14,380 and the death toll rises above 300.

February 9 - The death toll from COVID-19 is now over 800, surpassing the death toll of the SARS epidemic, which killed 773 people.

February 15 - France reports the first death from COVID-19 outside of Asia — an 80-year-old tourist from Hubei province.

February 19 - The death toll from COVID-19 surpasses 2,000.

February 27 - The number of infections globally continues to grow. There are 3,474 cases of COVID-19 — including 54 deaths — outside of China in 44 countries.

March 1 – First Australian death.

March 7 - The number of COVID-19 cases surpasses 100,000. Over 100 countries report cases of COVID-19.

March 20 - Australian borders were closed to all non-residents

March 24 - Cases of COVID-19 surpass 400,000. It took over three months to reach the first 100,000 confirmed cases, 12 days to reach 200,000, three days to reach 300,000, and two days to reach 400,000.

March 25 - Australian states start to close borders to interstate travellers.  All residents are told to isolate and "stay at home".

April 2 - Cases of COVID-19 surpass 1 million.

April 10 - The number of COVID-19 deaths around the world surpasses 100,000.

April 15 - The number of COVID-19 cases surpasses 2 million.

April 26 - The Australian government launches a tracking app to determine when a person has been in contact with someone with COVID-19. 

May 14 - The number of deaths from COVID-19 surpasses 300,000 globally.

May 21 - The number of COVID-19 cases surpasses 5 million globally. WHO receives reports of 106,000 new cases of COVID-19 —the most the agency has seen in a single day since the outbreak began.

May 24 - Australia had 7100 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 102 deaths. Around 6500 had recovered.
